Il dottor Xavier si inietta un siero che gli permette di ottenere una vista a raggi X. Procurata accidentalmente la morte di un collega, inizia a vagabondare di città in città. Dopo essere stato sfruttato anche in un luna park arriva alla decisione di accecarsi, anche per sfuggire ai dolorosi effetti collaterali del siero: terribili emicranie e necessità di portare occhiali piombati. Al culmine del suo periodo Poe, Corman ci prova con questo fantascientifico-horror, da un racconto di Ray Russell. Con pochi mezzi, molto ingegno e una storia implacabile e ben congegnata.
Tratto dall'omonimo romanzo giallo di Dashiell Hammett, il film è una brillante commedia sofisticata con spunti gialli, incentrata sulla vicenda di Nick e Nora Charles, una coppia di coniugi (ex investigatore lui, ricca ereditiera lei sempre accompagnati dalla cagnetta Asta) amanti della baldoria e dell'alcol, impegnati a investigare sulla scomparsa di uno scienziato e sugli omicidi che ne seguono.
