סופה כבדה שהתרחשה בשנת 1841 על אי נידח מול החוף המערבי של סקוטלנד, גורמת לספינת סוחר לשקוע. שלושת הניצולים החותרים בערפל סמיך, אבודים וחסרי התמצאות. הערפל מתחיל להתבהר והאי מופיע לפניהם. האי נטוש למעט ארבעה תושבים, איש נמל זקן, חקלאי, אחייניתו וצעירה ומשוגעת, הם מתקבלים בסבר פנים יפות. אנשים אלה בבירור לא ראו איש מהעולם החיצון במשך זמן מה וחוסר רצונם לעזור למלחים לחזור ליבשת ניכר. לאחר מנוחתם, שלושת הגברים נואשים לחזור הביתה אך הסירה המובטחת לעולם לא מופיעה. אחד המלחים מתחיל להטיל ספק במה שקרה באי ומדוע האנשים נטשו אותו. תוך חקירתו הוא מגלה כי בכל שנה בערך באותו תאריך חוזרת טרגדיה בים וצעירים מהאי ימותו. כששני חבריו לספינה נקלעים לתאונות קטלניות, המיתוס של סירנת רפאים הרודפת את האי מוביל אותו לנסות ולחשוף את האמת תוך שהוא נאבק להציל את חייו ולהימלט מציפורני האי.
