V první části se ocitáme na zákopech v období třetí karlistické války v roce 1875. Mladý muž Manuel Iriguíbel, zastrašen hrůzami bojů a nechutí bezdůvodně střílet lidi, je zraněn a v domnění, že je již mrtev, je ostatními vojáky naložen na vůz s mrtvými. Při strastiplné cestě, se probere z bezvědomí, jeho jediným svědkem „obživnutí“ a následného opuštění vozu, se stává kráva. Příběh se přesouvá do roku 1905, kdy stejný muž tráví čas malováním krávy, pozorujíc své tři vnučky. Synové obou rodin (Juan a Ignacio) jsou vyprovokováni k souboji v přetínání kmenů, a proto se rivalita prohlubuje ještě více. Na oba soupeře se uzavírají sázky a lítý boj může začít. V příběhu se objevují i záchvěvy lásky, které Juanova sestra Catalina nezvládá uchovávat v tajnosti a tiše Ignacia pozoruje v lese při tréningu na souboj.
