In the movie, Rick was killed by facing freddy in a mortal combat match until he was gutted.
In the novel, he dies when the cheerleaders leave and he becomes stuck in a falling elevator. Alice tried to pull him up, but isn't strong enough and he falls down the shaft.
In some ways the evelavor scene would've kept its horror style and allow Alice to actually try to prevent her brother's death
