Debat Captain Marvel

Is it just me or is this movie starting to look terrible?

I love Marvel, I've seen nearly all of their last 10 movies or so in theaters, but I am getting a really bad feeling about Captain Marvel. They are really leaning into this "strong female character" virtue signaling and that's always a bad sign as evidenced by Ghostbusters, it tells me they can't sell the movie on just being good, they have to try and imply if you don't see it or aren't excited about it you must hate women. The images I've seen look blah and Brie Larson just does not seem like a good fit for this role let alone what she's been saying on social media.

Conversely I never got this feeling with the Wonder Woman movie, and of course movies like Atomic Blonde or Mad Max Fury Road weren't sold on female empowerment even though both films had fantastic female characters and could have easily tried to hype that aspect.

There's a new saying "Get Woke Go Broke" which means that whenever a movie/show/book tries to sell you on how it's so pro woman/gay/trans/minority/whatever while not selling the story or characters then it's pretty much confirmed to be trash and no one buys it. I really hope I'm wrong but I fear the MCU is going to fall into this trap and go the way of Disney Star Wars.

I heard Alita is a great film, especially for girls since it focuses so much on the lead finding herself. Ill be going with the wife this Saturday to see it so ill probably do a little write up on it if Im impressed.

Agreed. But I think it will break 100 million opening easy. If I had to put a number on it I would say around 120 million opening weekend.

Really? What makes you think that? Sure they are shooting for Black Panther numbers, but BP was introduced in Civil War so it wasn't technically his first appearance, and there was obviously a lot of hype from the black community who were excited to see it, but I do not see any of that translating to CM. Black Window film? Yes, I could see that opening $100 million, but I do not see the same hype around CM.

The last official origin film they released was Doctor Strange and it opened with $85 million and that looked way more interesting and new compared to CM. Of course I could be very wrong here, but with the controversy around BL souring this movie and many many fans including myself who were already on the fence deciding not to see it, I just don't see CM doing $100 unless they are giving away free chicken wings with every ticket purchased.

Also I saw Alita Battle Angel today and it was way better than I had expected it to be and am really hoping it gets a sequel.

I think 120 million +/- 10 million simply because they are going to be shilling the first FEMALE MCU solo film. Which I still think should have been Black Widow since she deserved it for being in so many films. They are also probably going to be donating a bunch of tickets/fundraising for girls and stuff like that. I think BP also did the same for kids in low poverty areas. They are already counting on the feminist/SJW crowd to go see it. And of course are already spinning the 'if you dont like this film you are sexist' shit they tried to pull with Ghostbusters2016.

I dont think Marvel cares about Larson opening her big sexist and racist mouth. If they tried to silence her it would be worse for them so I think they picked the lesser of two evils. At least in Marvels eyes that is. I could be wrong and it could be less or more, but I dont think it would be much more. I dont think SJW/feminists would go see it multiple times like hardcore fans would. Im just really curious to see if Larson will damage the brand anymore before the premiere.

And Alita did well overseas with 203 million over seas. But domestic was pretty terrible after its first week. I enjoyed it and hope we get a sequel.

EDIT Wow looks like Rottentomatoes just got rid of the 'want to see' score for pre release...right when CM got a score of 26% I believe...coincidence?

I'm sure Marvel is crying themselves to Bridget Jones boxsets that roaches like you think Cap Marvel is garbage.

Oh didn't realize you owned The Movie DB, where do I send your check? You can tell the movie this movie is going to be utter shit. Plot was leaked on Reddit (hint: it was crap), early reviews give most of the credit to the cat in the movie and not the leading lady - need I go on? But the way marvel is heading I am jumping ship and fast (just like Star Wars). But you keep your fanboyism cranked to 11, as I am sure it will help the shitfest move along ever so swiftly. And no this is not my main account, that one is older than your ass hairs.

Thank you for thinking I have that much ambition as to create a new account just to give myself a thumbs up lol. As for this being garbage, I think it could be garbage, but I also thought that about Wonder Woman and I was dead wrong about that. So ill wait and see what people are saying after it comes out. But for now, its looking like a pass.

My main issue about the prejudgment of this movie is that we go through this with almost every Marvel movie. It's like there are people just hoping Marvel/Disney will fail one day. What really gets me is each time, they act like this time it will be different. Remember when people thought Black Panther was gonna fail because it had an all black cast, how no one was going to watch Ant-Man because Edgar Wright left, Doctor Strange was gonna fail because reasons, or when Guardians of the Galaxy was gonna fail because who the fuck is the Guardians of the Galaxy? Let's not get started on the constant bitching that all Hollywood makes are Comic Book movies (when that's never been the case). Now there are even people saying that Marvel is finished after End Game. I guess if people keep being foretelling a bleak future, they might be right once.

You make a great point, I can't really argue with that take, but I do feel like this is a slightly different situation from those others. I think Captain Marvel has the misfortune of coming out a time where a lot of men, myself included, are becoming very wary of the numerous anti-male/male hatred messages coming from entertainment and advertising. I mean look at the backlash to that Gillette commercial from last month. Brie Larson picked a bad time to complain about men and the patriarchy when men are the ones largely paying to see MCU movies.

This is not about the movie itself, which will probably be fine, this is about using my wallet to let Marvel and other industries know that if you or your employees say hateful things about men you lose money, and calling us names for voicing are concerns are just going to close our wallets tighter. I think this is just another sign of the times that men are getting tired of being crapped on and no consequences being suffered to the person doing the crapping. Captain Marvel will still make money, just not as as it could have.

To be fair she's only really crapping on white males. I can't really see how her speaking for greater diversity and promoting more opportunities for women and minorities is gonna be looked at as a bad thing by most people in the world.

LOOKED AT AS A BAD THING BY DEFENSIVE WHITE MALES...
