O conceito da série foi criado para o Discovery Channel como Tall Tales or True pelo roteirista e produtor australiano Peter Rees da Beyond Productions em 2002. A Discovery inicialmente rejeitou a proposta porque eles tinham acabado de encomendar uma série sobre o mesmo tópico. Rees refinou o projeto para se focar mais no teste de elementos chaves da história ao invés de simplesmente recontá-las. A Discovery concordou em produzir três episódios pilotos da série. Jamie Hyneman foi um dos vários artistas de efeitos especiais que receberam um pedido da produtora para produzir um vídeo de seleção para a consideração da emissora.
