1982年、ここは東京郊外の町、帆立市巻貝町10番地、閑静な住宅地の一角にある浜野家。

今日も一家に大騒動が起きている。大手企業の部長で働き者のイワシを父に、私大英文科卒のサンゴを母に桜貝小学校の秀才6年生であるタタミを姉に持つ凡才4年生のあさりがこの物語の主人公。

彼女は頭の良い姉がいるばっかりに、ことごとく損な役回りとなっていじけるか落ちこぼれになるはずなのに、猛然と抵抗し、姉のいびりにも、母のしごきにもめげずに、毎日がんばっているのです。
