Désolation
Le grand-père de Setsu, qui lui avait tout appris du shamisen, lui demande à sa mort de cesser d’en jouer, car selon lui, malgré son don pour l’instrument, le son qu’il en tire est mauvais. Déboussolé, le jeune homme quitte Aomori pour Tokyo, afin de trouver un sens à sa vie. Là, il rencontre Yuna qui veut devenir actrice et Taketo, son petit ami, profiteur et infidèle.

Dans son nouveau lycée, Setsu a la surprise d’entendre un morceau qui se trouve avoir beaucoup d’importance non seulement pour lui, mais aussi pour une de ses camarades. Cette dernière lui demande de le jouer devant sa grand-mère, mais Setsu refuse, ne s’en sentant pas le talent.

Apparemment, la mère de Setsu a tout fait pour le piéger en vue du concours de shamisen qu’elle organise, ce qui commence par passablement l’agacer. Le club du lycéen, lui, prend doucement son envol. Très doucement, même, en raison d’un certain mauvais vouloir de la part de Setsu, peu motivé au départ, et dont la patience n’est pas la qualité principale.
