Overview
故事的背景舞台設在近未來的日本，還以香港的街道作為基礎，大約2030年代前後。彼時進步的科技已可將人體的大部分替換為生化軀體，且透過埋藏在大腦中的線路，人類意識可以進入數位網絡之中。此時出現了許多生化人與網絡黑客的新型態犯罪事件，因此成立了直屬於首相的「公安九課」（通稱：攻殼機動隊），以武裝實力來直接打擊犯罪。
本作品對於未來科技的考據、設想，以及精緻細密的描寫，塑造出獨特的世界觀而吸引眾多的科幻愛好者，並對後來的《黑客帝國》等許多科幻作品有顯著的影響。故事中女主角，草薙素子，自幼即全身都是義肢，2029年正式成為公安九課隊長，格鬥戰實力也是九課內最強，並以她卓越的指揮能力獲得隊員們的信賴，隊員們都稱呼她為「少佐」。
比較起來，士郎正宗原著的漫畫以短篇單元為主，人物在不作戰時表現很輕鬆，對世界抱持樂觀態度。押井守導演的動畫電影的人物則較嚴肅，笑容也只有一兩次，而且把兒童個性的攻殼車角色略去。神山健治導演的電視版動畫則介於兩者之間。
