Seit Jahrhunderten tobt ein verbitterter Krieg um die Erde zwischen Androiden und Maschinenwesen. Die Androidin 2B, eine YoRHa-Einheit, wird nun für eine Mission auf die Erdoberfläche entsandt.

Der Menschheitsrat ruft alle Androiden mit ermutigenden Worten dazu auf, im Krieg gegen die Maschinenwesen nicht zu verzagen. Doch Lily, ein Mitglied des Widerstands, erfüllt die Botschaft nicht mit Zuversicht sondern Bitterheit.

2B und 9S sind kaum im Widerstandslager angekommen, da ergibt sich für sie auch schon die Gelegenheit, mit Jackass, einem Mitglied des Widerstands, in die Wüstenregion zu fahren.

2B und 9S werden von der Kommandantin losgeschickt, um nach verschollenen YoRHa-Einheiten zu suchen. Diese waren auf einer Mission, bei der die scheinbar freundlichen Signalen von Maschinenwesen auf den Grund gehen sollten.

Ein Dorf voller Maschinenwesen, die friedlich zusammenleben und keinen Streit suchen? 9S steht dem Ganzen eher skeptisch gegenüber. Egal, wie freundlich ihr Anführer, Pascal, sich gibt.

Ausgelöst von einer Frage von 9S erzählt Lily 2B von ihrer Vergangenheit und einer bestimmten Mission, die sie für immer verändert hat.

2B und 9S treffen zufällig auf Pascal, der einem aufgelösten Maschinenwesen hinterherjagt. Eine kleine Schwester ging verloren und trotz 9S' Misstrauen helfen die zwei Androiden bei der Suche.

Nach der Konfrontation mit A2 werden 2B und 9S von der Kommandantin damit betraut, sie ausfinding zu machen. 9S wird währenddessen das Gefühl nicht los, dass ihnen etwas Wichtiges verschwiegen wird.
