Takumi již od třinácti let rozváží autem ranní zásilky tofu pro obchod svého otce. Nyní je mu konečně osmnáct a on získává řidičský průkaz. Jeho jízdy pravidelně vedou přes místní horu jménem Akina, na níž se často pořádají závody aut. Takumi však nemá o závodění zájem, protože jezdění průsmyky této hory vždy bral jako pracovní povinnost a ne jako zábavu. Jednoho dne je ale proti své vůli přihlášen do turnaje a po hladké výhře začíná zjišťovat, že se mu závody začínají líbit. Postupně tak přicházejí výzvy od stále silnějších a lepších soupeřů. Ti ovšem záhy zjišťují, že Takumi není jen tak ledajaký řidič.
Absolutní outsider Sean Boswell (Lucas Black) vidí v nelegálních automobilových závodech jediný způsob jako utéct před tíživou realitou světa sešněrovaného konvencemi a nesmyslnými zákazy.
