Po tragické události, při které zemře jejich kamarád, se parta čtyř kamarádů vydává do švédské přírody uctít jeho památku a zároveň upevnit narušená přátelství. Po úrazu jednoho z nich a nepřízni počasí se zpátky do civilizace vydávají "zkratkou". Jak řekne jeden z nich - kdyby zkratka byla cesta, dávno by se jí říkalo cesta. A má pravdu - na co skupina v lese narazí, neexistuje příliš racionální vysvětlení a všichni musí bojovat s démony - ať už s těmi, na které nyní narazí, tak s těmi, které mají hluboko uvnitř po smrti kamaráda...
Léta Páně 1348, v anglickém království řádí epidemie moru. Smrt si nevybírá a kosí všechny bez rozdílu, v bezpečí před ní nejsou ani mniši za zdmi kláštera. Jedním z nich je mladý novic Osmund, jenž je rozerván mezi láskou k dívce Averill a láskou k Bohu. Rád by klášter opustil, ale také touží sloužit Bohu, a tak jej žádá, aby mu seslal znamení. V té chvíli do kláštera přichází biskupův vyslanec Ulric a přináší zvěst o vesnici nepostižené morem. Mezi lidmi se šušká o nekromantovi, který ve spojení s temnými silami umí křísit mrtvé, a takovým pověstem musí církev učinit přítrž. Vesnice se nachází uprostřed Velkého močálu a Ulric potřebuje průvodce. Osmund se sám nabídne a vydává se tak vstříc světu temnoty a krutého fanatismu. Snímek Černá smrt, žánrově oscilující mezi historickým dramatem a hororem, nabízí kromě napínavé podívané také úvahu nad vztahem víry a moci a nebezpečím jakéhokoli fanatismu, plynoucího ať už z vypočítavosti či hlubinných osobních pohnutek.
Umělecky laděný "dokument z cest" a současně osobitou meditaci nad životem všech obyvatel naší planety natočil kameraman, scenárista a režisér Ron Fricke, který se podílel také na vzniku slavného dokumentárního snímku Koyaanisqatsi. Stejně jako jeho tvůrce Godfrey Reggio, vybral si i Fricke pro název svého filmu slovo z jazyka přírodního národa: baraka znamená v nářečí kmene Sufi štěstí, vůni, dech, ale i "esenci života, z níž pramení evoluční vývoj". Filmové záběry zachycují tvář Země v její neobyčejné různorodosti.

Pro Liinu je tak získat Hansovo srdce v této temné, drsné krajině, kde společně dlí vlkodlaci, přízraky, mor i ďábel, kde nekontrolovaně bují zbojnictví a kde jsou lidské duše o to cennější, nesmírně obtížné. Díky podmanivé černobílé expozici Rainer Sarnet živě zachycuje pestrost životů i s každodenní dřinou, která je provází. Má pak samotná existence cenu, když člověk postrádá duši?
Manželé Patrick a Louis po dlouhých devíti letech nadále trpí smutkem ze smrti jejich jediné dcerky, která byla brutálně napadena divokým psem.
