1984. Η Ανατολική Γερμανία βρίσκεται για τα καλά εγκλωβισμένη μέσα στο θεοσκότεινο τούνελ, που την έχουν οδηγήσει οι ακραίες ορέξεις του απολυταρχικού καθεστώτος και οι απάνθρωπες κινήσεις των μυστικών υπηρεσιών, δίχως να διαφαίνεται κάποιο φως σε κάποια από τις άκρες του. Ο πράκτορας Γκερντ Βίσλερ, λαμβάνει την εντολή από τον διοικητή του Ταξίαρχος Γκρούμπιτζ, να οργανώσει επιχείρηση παρακολούθησης ενός από τους πιο αναγνωρισμένους συγγραφείς της χώρας, του Γκιοργκ Ντράιμαν, του οποίου οι φιλοκυβερνητικές πεποιθήσεις έχουν τεθεί εν αμφιβόλω. Εκείνος όμως έχοντας πλήρη άγνοια για τις ορέξεις της Στάζι, παρακινούμενος από τον βάναυσο τρόπο διακυβέρνησης του Χόνεκερ, επιθυμεί να αποστείλει στην Δύση, ένα κείμενο μανιφέστο για την αντιδημοκρατική λειτουργία της πατρίδας του.
Ο Συνταγματάρχης Στοκ, ένας αξιωματικός των Σοβιετικών μυστικών υπηρεσιών, υπεύθυνος για την ασφάλεια του Τείχους του Βερολίνου, φαίνεται πως θέλει ν΄αυτομολήσει αλλά τα στοιχεία δείχνουν το αντίθετο. Ο Στοκ θέλει να αναλάβουν οι Βρετανοί την αυτομόλησή του και ζητάει έναν από τους πράκτορές τους, τον Χάρι Πάλμερ, να τον βγάλει λαθραία από την Ανατολική Γερμανία.
Ένας Αμερικανός επιστήμονας διαφεύγει με δημοσιότητα στην Ανατολική Γερμανία, ως μέλος ενός σχεδίου για να βρει την χημική σύσταση μιας ουσίας και μετά να βρει τρόπο να επιστρέψει στη Δύση.
Βρισκόμαστε στο 1956. Ο Τέο και ο Κουρτ, δύο μαθητές λυκείου και φίλοι, παρακολουθούν με κομμένη την ανάσα εικόνες από τα τραγικά γεγονότα που ακολούθησαν μετά την ουγγρική εξέγερση στη Βουδαπέστη. Επιστρέφοντας στην πόλη τους η ενέργειά τους να κρατήσουν ένα λεπτό σιγή στη διάρκεια του μαθήματος προς τιμήν των θυμάτων, προκαλεί μεγάλη αναταραχή.
Καλοκαίρι, 1980. Η Μπάρμπαρα, είναι γιατρός κι έχει κάνει αίτηση για βίζα για να φύγει την Ανατολική Γερμανία. Ως τιμωρία, έχει μετατεθεί από το Βερολίνο, σε ένα πολύ μικρό νοσοκομείο στην εξοχή μακριά από οτιδήποτε. Ο Γιοργκ, ο εραστής της από τη Δύση, σχεδιάζει ήδη την απόδραση της. Η Μπάρμπαρα περιμένει υπομονετικά κλεισμένη στον εαυτό της. Το νέο διαμέρισμα, οι γείτονες, το καλοκαίρι, η εξοχή δε σημαίνουν τίποτα για εκείνη. Στη δουλειά της, ως χειρούργος παιδίατρος, υπό την επίβλεψη του Αντρέ, είναι πολύ τρυφερή απέναντι στους ασθενείς της, αλλά ψυχρή προς τους συναδέλφους της. Το μέλλον της, σκέφτεται θα ξεκινήσει σύντομα. Αλλά ο Αντρέ την μπερδεύει. Η πίστη του στις ικανότητες της, η συμπεριφορά του, το χαμόγελο του. Γιατί την καλύπτει όταν θα βοηθήσει τη μικρή φυγά Σάρα; Μήπως έχει αναλάβει να την παρακολουθεί; Μήπως είναι ερωτευμένος; Όσο πλησιάζει η μέρα για να φύγει, αρχίζει και χάνει τον έλεγχο.
