Film over het leven van Aung San Suu Kyi, een Myanmarese politica, leidster van de geweldloze beweging voor de mensenrechten en democratie in Myanmar (voorheen Birma) en winnares van de Nobelprijs voor de Vrede van 1991. De film verhaalt over de gebeurtenissen die plaatsvinden tussen 1988 en 1999. In 1988 verlaat Suu Kyi Oxford om haar zieke moeder te bezoeken in Birma, uiteindelijk zal ze daar ook blijven. Toen bij haar man, Dr. Michael Aris, die ze sinds 1995 niet meer had gezien, in maart 1999 in Engeland prostaatkanker werd vastgesteld, werd Suu Kyi voor de haast onmogelijke keuze geplaatst in Birma te blijven of hem op zijn laatste ziekbed te bezoeken, met het risico dat ze bij terugkeer niet meer in het land zou worden toegelaten.
