Mažoji Čijo ramiai augo neturtingame žvejų kaimelyje, kol nelemtą dieną jos šeimos neištiko nelaimė – mirė Čijo motina. Našliui tėvui teko nepavydėtina dalia auginti dvi dukras. Nebegalėdamas mergaičių išmaitinti tėvas parduoda jas į Kiotą. Čia prasideda seserų vargai. Palydėtos į didmiestį įtakingo Pirmininko vyresnioji Čijo sesuo patenka tiesiai į žemiausio rango viešnamį, o vos devynerių sulaukusiai Čijo pasiseka – ji atsiduria vienuose garsiausių geišų namų ir patenka į šeimininkės – Motinėlės globą. Mergaitė tampa tarnaite, dirbančia tik už maistą ir stogą virš galvos, kol vyresnioji nenuspręs, kad ji tinkama tapti geiša.
