Για τον μέσο Αμερικάνο και παρά το νόμο περί εκμίσθωσης και δανεισμού που είχε περάσει από το Κογκρέσο το Φλεβάρη του 1941 ο δεύτερος παγκόσμιος πόλεμος δεν ήταν παρά ένας μακρινός εφιάλτης. Ένας μακρινός εφιάλτης από τον οποίο θα ξυπνήσουν βίαια το Κυριακάτικο πρωινό της 7ης Δεκεμβρίου 1941 μετά την επίθεση της Ιαπωνικής Αυτοκρατορίας στον στόλο το Ειρηνικού για να συρθούν σε μια ακόμα εφιαλτικότερη πραγματικότητα.
