Gargoilikavereidensa Victorin, Hugon ja Lavernen kehottamana Quasimodo lähtee torninsa yksinäisestä turvasta ja suuntaa etsimään ensimmäistä todellista ystäväänsä, mustalaiskaunotar Esmeraldaa. Kun Esmeralda pidätetään ja suljetaan katedraaliin, Quasi auttaa hänet pakoon ja Esmeralda uskoo hänelle salaisen kartan mustalaisten piilopaikkaan.
