La storia del film si sviluppa intorno ad un romanziere di cronaca nera che fatica a trovare uno scoop. Così decide di trasferirsi con moglie e figli in una casa dove ha avuto luogo l'orribile assassinio di una intera famiglia. Ma, dopo aver trovato in una scatola alcune videocasette che mostrano i brutali omicidi di altre famiglie, la sua indagine lo porterà alla scoperta di un'entità soprannaturale che sta minacciando anche i suoi familiari.

Nell’estate del 1979, un gruppo di amici di una piccola cittadina dell’Ohio è testimone di un disastro ferroviario, mentre sono intenti ad effettuare le riprese di un film girato in Super 8 da mostrare ad un festival provinciale. Capiscono subito che non si tratta di un semplice incidente perchè “qualcosa” fugge dal luogo disastro. La questione è talmente importante che la loro cittadina si riempie di militari intenti ad indagare, le persone cominciano a scomparire e strani fatti cominciano ad accadere nella città. Lo sceriffo del posto comincia ad indagare per cercare la verità e si troverà di fronte a qualcosa sconvolgente oltre ogni immaginazione. Alla fine starà ai ragazzi riuscire a mettere insieme i pezzi di una storia che procederà comunque, con o senza il loro intervento, e dalla quale dovranno uscire vivi.

Nell'aprile 1975 scoppia la guerra civile; Beirut è divisa lungo una linea musulmano-cristiana. Tarek è al liceo e fa film in Super 8 con il suo amico, Omar. All'inizio la guerra è un'allodola: la scuola è chiusa, la violenza è affascinante, andare dall'occidente all'oriente è un gioco. Sua madre vuole andarsene; suo padre rifiuta. Tarek trascorre del tempo con May, un cristiano, orfano e che vive nel suo edificio. Per caso, Tarek si reca in un famigerato bordello nel quartiere delle olive devastato dalla guerra, dove incontra la sua leggendaria signora, Oum Walid. Quindi porta Omar e May lì usando la sua biancheria intima come bandiera bianca per un passaggio sicuro. Aumentano le tensioni familiari. Quando diventa maggiorenne, la guerra passa inesorabilmente dall'avventura alla tragedia.

I problemi finanziari che stanno attraversando costringono Alfredo e Carmen ad accettare questa balorda richiesta.

His horizons widen when he is sent to regional film festivals with his first works but his focus on movie making also leads to domestic strife and philosophical dilemmas.
