Z is een werkmier die zich maar onbelangrijk voelt tussen de duizenden andere mieren. Als hij de princes Bala ontmoet is hij gelijk verliefd. Hij ruilt van plaats met zijn vriend Weaver, een soldaat, om tijdens een parade Bala van dichtbij te kunnen zien. Helaas breekt net op dat moment oorlog uit, en moet Z als soldaat aan de slag. Hij groeit uit tot een held.
Het verhaal speelt zich af in het futuristische Chigago. Beatrice is een van de vele tieners die op haar 16e uit één van de 5 facties moet kiezen waarin de stad verdeeld is: oprechtheid, onverschrokkenheid, eruditie, vriendschap en zelfverloochening. Uit een test moet blijken welke het beste bij haar past. Beatrice maakt aan de hand van de test haar keuze en krijgt in haar gekozen factie te maken met een heftige inwijding, die het uiterste van haar vraagt.
Leonard is een onderzoeker voor een verzekeringsmaatschappij. Zijn geheugen is ernstig beschadigd na een poging in te grijpen bij de moord van z'n vrouw. Het geluk lijkt weer te keren wanneer David met Sofia herenigd wordt, en artsen zijn gezicht in de oude staat kunnen herstellen.
Dr. Reese is geobsedeerd door gen-regeneratie en is gefascineerd door het verschijnsel dromen. Hij onderzoekt Gabriel Howarth, een jongen die zijn leven op zijn kop is gaan staan doordat zijn gewelddadige dromen en de werkelijkheid zich gingen vermengen. Als Gabriels droom een beeld is van een stel politieke moorden moet hij niet enkel zichzelf en zijn vrouw Brinn zien te redden maar ook het experimenteel programma van de overheid een halt toe roepen. De tijd dringt en Gabriel is in levensgevaar, maar Dr. Reese heeft mogelijk de weg naar de waarheid.
