En rekke tilfeldige hendelser fører til at Z går fra å være en vanlig arbeider til koloniens store helt. Intetanende stikker han også kjepper i hjulene for den ambisiøse General Mandibles planer om å tilintetgjøre kolonien for siden å gjenskape den i sitt eget bilde. Z leder revolusjonen som blir en feiring av individualiteten i et samfunn som opprinnelig ble skapt i konformitetens bilde.
