2차 대전으로 어수선한 프랑스령 모로코, 미국인인 릭(험프리 보가트)은 암시장과 도박이 판치는 카사블랑카에서 카페를 운영하고 있다. 어느 날 미국으로 가기 위해 비자를 기다리는 피난민들 틈에 섞여 레지스탕스 리더인 라즐로(폴 헨라이드)와 아내 일자(잉그리드 버그만)이 릭의 카페를 찾는다. 일자는 릭의 옛 연인이었다. 라즐로는 릭에게 미국으로 갈 수 있는 통행증을 부탁하지만 아직도 일자를 잊지 못하는 릭은 선뜻 라즐로의 청을 들어주지 못한다. 경찰서장 르노와 독일군 소령 스트라세는 라즐로를 쫓아 릭의 카페를 찾고, 결국 릭은 라즐로와 함께 일자를 떠나보내는데...

2차 세계대전 중 파리 근교의 중학교에 새 학기가 시작된다. 12살의 줄리앙은 엄마와 눈물로 헤어지고 기숙사에 들어와 새로 전학 온 장 보네와 침대를 나란히 쓰게 된다. 보네는 영리하며 피아노 연주를 무척 잘했지만 말이 적고 비밀스러워 보여 친구들에게 괴롭힘을 당한다. 그러던 어느 날 산 속에서 보물 찾기를 하다가 둘만 무리와 떨어져 함께 산 속을 방황한 사건 이후 둘은 절친한 사이가 된다. 하지만 시간이 지나면서 줄리앙은 보네가 유태인이고 학교에 숨어 있는 것이라는 사실을 알게 되는데, 어느 날 학교로 게슈타포가 찾아와 검문을 시작한다.

나치 점령기의 프랑스, 레지스탕스 대장인 필립 제르비에는 동료의 배신으로 체포되어 포로 수용소로 보내진다. 가까스로 탈출한 필립은 마르세유에서 펠릭스, 르 비종 등의 동료들과 합류하여 자신을 밀고한 배신자를 처형한다. 레지스탕스 활동을 계속하던 중 필립과 동료 뤽은 런던에서 드골 장군을 만나 훈장을 받는다. 리용에서 펠릭스가 체포되자 프랑스로 돌아온 필립은 동지들과 함께 펠릭스 구출작전을 벌인다. 하지만 철통같은 경비의 감옥에 접근하기는 쉽지 않은데...

In occupied France, a convicted thief and murderer escapes the guillotine when a bombing raid strikes the prison, but is quickly re-captured by the inspector of the Surete responsible for his original arrest. Fearing the guillotine more than his actual death, the convict inveigles the inspector to help him with a plan to rescue 100 Frenchmen taken by the Gestapo following an act of sabotage: he will confess to being the saboteur and allow himself to be executed by firing squad, the Gestapo's method of execution, thus freeing the 100 men.

Upset at the idea of their only son marrying a Jewish woman, Jean Jausion's parents decide to keep young Annette Zelman away from them... and denounce her to the Gestapo. The machine was launched, but it was too late. Annette was deported to Auschwitz on June 22, 1942.

프랑스의 마르셀 오펄즈라는 좀 생소한 감독이 만들었고 프랑스, 스위스, 서독의 공동 자본으로 만든 작품인데, 특이한 점이라는 것은 다큐멘타리와 픽션이 혼합된 일종의 다이렉트 시네마라는 점이다. 영화의 주요 내용은 세계 제2차대전 당시 독일군 점령하의 프랑스가 배경이며 거기에서 활동했던 레지스탕스의 모습을 그린 것이다. 말하자면 이 영화는 우리의 일제 시대와 같은 프랑스의 모습을 담은 역사물인데 마르셀 오펄즈 감독은 이 영화의 역사성을 살리기위해 실존 인물들과의 대단히 많은 인터뷰를 수록하고 있는데 여기에서 인터뷰 상대인 사람들이 당시의 상황에 대해 무엇인가 숨기려고하고 질문을 회피하려고 안간힘을 쓰는 모습들이 적나라하게 화면에 보여진다. 이러한 직접적인 인터뷰의 사용이 사건의 중요성을 강조하는 면도 있지만 시각적으로는 상당히 지루한 면도 없지않아 있다. 원래는 TV용으로 제작되었다가 그 주제의 커다란 솔직성과 방영 후 사회에 미칠 파급성을 고려해서 현지에서도 방송 불가 조치가 내려 다시 극장용 영화로 재편집되었다. 우리나라에서도 바로 이러한 점이 문제되어 상영이 불가능했는데, 어느 나라이든 감추고 싶은 역사는 있게 마련이나, 문제는 잘잘못의 분명한 선별없이는 억울한 희생자가 계속 나온다는 점이다. 그래서 마르셀 오펄즈 감독도 이런 영화를 제작한 것 같은데 우리나라도 친일파 문제가 분명히 처리되지 않았고 아직도 번연히 친일파들이 활동하고 있는 상황에서, 더우기 반민특위를 강제로 와해시킨 정부가 존재했었던 점을 상기할때 이 영화의 방영불가 판정은 더욱 의미심장하게 느껴진다. 영화적 재미보다는 역사적 진실앞에 서있는 위선자들의 모습을 보면서 역사를 대하는 우리들의 자세를 다시한번 생각하게 한다는 점에서 높이 평가하고 싶다. 이 영화의 비디오판은 미국의 RCA/콜럼비아사 판으로 나왔다.

With the ending of the Spanish Civil War, a dispirited band of volunteers from the International Brigades seeks refuge in France. But on reaching the frontier, the band is disarmed, and all are detained as political prisoners. Then come instructions from Vichy that all fit prisoners are to be sent to Morocco to work on the Sahara railway for the Germans. However, one man manages to escape to London with vital information for the Allies.

World War II, June 1940. France has fallen and suffers the relentless boot of Nazi Germany. But Algeria, the prized French colony in North Africa, remains part of the territory controlled by the Vichy regime of Marshal Pétain.
