James Cole prožil převážnou většinu svého života v podzemí. Nyní, v roce 2025, žije v ponuré, tmavé, zasněžené přítomnosti. Začalo to už na konci dvacátého století, kdy během dvou let (1996 a 1997) zemřelo přičiněním neznámého bídáka, který vypustil do ovzduší nebezpečný vir, pět miliard obyvatel zeměkoule. Zůstalo jen jedno procento lidí, kteří se teď krčí jako krtci pod zemí. Hrstka lidí se s tím ale nehodlá jenom tak smířit, a proto vysílá do minulosti prostřednictvím stroje času „nedobrovolné dobrovolníky“ z řad vězňů. Jejich úkolem v podstatě není spasit svět a odvrátit neštěstí – co se stalo, nejde odestát. Mají jen pozorovat, sbírat vzorky a odhalit zdroj nákazy, původ všeho zla. Vědci už pak zajistí vše ostatní, vyvinou protilátku a zařídí, aby se lidstvo jednadvacátého století mohlo vrátit zpátky na povrch zemský...
Simon Phoenix, násilník a vrah kryogenicky zmrazený v roce 1996, unikl během projednávání podmínečného propuštění roku 2032 v utopii San Angeles. Policie se není schopna vypořádat s jeho násilnými způsoby a proto rozmrazí bývalého policistu, Johna Spartana, který byl také hluboce zmrazen, po křivém obvinění ze zabití 30 nevinných lidí, zatímco zatýkal Phoenixe.
In 2007, in the midst of the drought and water shortages, the NSW State government has unveiled plans to tap into and recycle millions of litres of water trapped in a network of abandoned train tunnels just beneath the heart of Sydney. However the government suddenly goes cold on the plan and it is not made public why. There is talk of homeless people who use the tunnel as shelter going missing, even though the government states that there are no homeless people in there. This, and the silence from the officials and ministers, leads a journalist, Natasha to begin an investigation into a government cover-up. She and her crew Pete (Producer), Steve (Cameraman) and Tangles (Sound Technichian) decide to investigate the story in the tunnel.

Filmu předchází sdělení zástupce budapešťského metra, že příběh nemá nic společného s realitou. Režisér vytvořil ponurou (post)modernistickou hříčku, která se celá odehrává v podzemí a jejímiž hrdiny je parta revizorů, znesvářených nejen s kolegy, ale především s neurvalými, agresivními cestujícími… V podzemí se dějí prapodivné věci: na okamžik zhasínají veškerá světla, přibývá sebevrahů, kteří se vrhají pod kola souprav, dokonce tu prochází jakási zlověstná postava v kápi, možná zabiják, možná zosobněná smrt. Ta v závěru začíná kroužit i kolem hlavního protagonisty Bulcsúa (Sándor Csányi), který je dokonce podezřelý, že nic netušící lidi sráží z nástupiště. Muž se totiž do prostor metra doslova přestěhoval, neboť mu přestala vyhovovat existence, jakou vedl na povrchu města.
When her archaeologist father disappears on an expedition, Wanda sets out to look for him. What she finds is a secret underground world, where no one believes in life on the surface and where she and her father are taken for spies.
The US military is running a test for a special type of radio transmitter, to be used to communicate with submarines, in a deep system of underground caves in Central America. When the signal from one of the transmitters suddenly disappears, a team of soldiers led by Major Elbert Stevens and cave specialists led by Rupert 'Wolf' Wolfsen including scientist Leslie Peterson are sent in to find out what happened. Exploring deep underground, they stumble upon a tribe of albino cave-dwellers who have apparently been isolated from the rest of the world for thousands of years. The cave-dwellers are hurt by radio frequencies and are able to see in infra-red frequencies, tracking the explorers by their body heat.
A huge, alien structure resembling an inverted cone, appears in the woods outside a small rural town. Sent from Washington to investigate the origin of the mysterious object, a team of investigators discovers that intelligent parasites from inside the "cone" can attach themselves to humans' nervous systems and control their minds, taking control of the authorities and workers, making communication with the outside world impossible, and leaving the responsibility of stopping the invasion up to seven people who have thus far been able to avoid possession by these creatures from parts unknown.
