In New York City, Thom is broke and jobless, illegally working as a taxi driver. Kaurismäki è ambientato in una Parigi dei giorni nostri quasi astratta; i personaggi sono artisti e poveri, ma tra i quaranta e i cinquanta anni, spesso immigrati; invece di Puccini, musica di Mozart, valzerini francesi, voci di Moulodji e S. Reggiani e una triste canzone giapponese per la morte di Mimì. I fatti sono press'a poco gli stessi, ma privi di aura romantica, raffreddati da una recitazione atonale e da un umorismo impassibile. Citazioni a iosa e 2 comparse speciali: i registi Louis Malle e Samuel Fuller. Impregnato di un'allegria da naufraghi che non esclude né dignità né tenerezza.
