故事描述一個至今仍逍遙法外的瘋狂殺人魔「黃道帶殺手」，其神秘的密碼殺人遊戲令全美國上下人心惶惶，可說是美國版的開膛手傑克。他公開宣稱殺過十三個人，後來又陸續殺了二十幾個人。警方確認，他犯過的七宗案件中有五宗遇害者身亡，但實際死亡人數無法確定，不過，遇害者中確實有人存活。這個故事改編自真實的連續殺人案件，當時震驚整個舊金山灣區，而當地的司法單位合力解讀兇手留下的密碼和信件，但幾十年來仍沒有結果。【索命黃道帶】是全球知名大導演大衛芬奇（David Fincher）的最新力作，也是一部驚悚電影，他之前的作品有【火線追緝令】（se7en）和【鬥陣俱樂部】（Fight Club）等。這個故事中，追捕這個恐怖殺人兇手的四個人愈陷愈深，而兇手不斷留下的線索也危及他們的生命和安定生活，將他們置於未知的境界。
