Film prikazuje zadnja leta njegovega življenja, ki jih preživlja v svojem dvorcu in se bori proti zatiranju. Odločen je, da se nikoli ne bo odrekel svoji svobodi in da se nikoli ne bo pridružil fašistični stranki. Mussolini ga spoštuje, a se ga hkrati boji in ve, da mora imeti d'Annunzia pod nadzorom.
