Peter LaFleur (Vince Vaughn), je charismatický muž a zároveň majitel nevábné tělocvičny zvané Average Joe´s (Průměrný Joe). Klientelu tohoto zařízení ovšem tvoří návštěvníci, kteří nedosahují ani na průměr: samozvaný pirát, rachitický středoškolák, který touží ohromit nedostižnou roztleskávačku, náruživý nadšenec minoritních sportů, přitroublý mladík a nafoukaný všeuměl, který ve skutečnosti neumí vůbec nic. White (Ben Stiller) chce převzít Average Joe´s a Peterovo neexistující účetnictví mu to velmi usnadní. Banka, která provádí převod tělocvičny ve prospěch Globo Gym, jmenuje právní zástupkyni Kate Veatchovou (Christine Taylorová), aby tento proces dokončila. Ale Peterův chlapecký šarm vyhraje a Kate se přidá na jeho stranu a pokusí se Average Joe´s zachránit. Jak? Účastí na šampionátu ve vybíjené, kde se za vítězství vyplácí prémie 50 000 USD, což je přesně tolik, kolik Peter potřebuje na záchranu tělocvičny. Dají se v šibeničním termínu zvládnout základy vybíjené?

Rozzlobený odmítne opustit letiště, dokud se rakev nenajde a tak je nucen strávit v nepohodlné hale celé dlouhé dva dny. Jedná přitom s Ellen Andrewsovou, Američankou, která pracuje pro aerolinie a má na starosti péči o zákazníky.
