Příběh je zasazený do chladné postapokalyptické budoucnosti roku 2031. Po neúspěšném pokusu o zvrácení globálního oteplování nastala nová doba ledová. Z planety Země se stala sněhová koule a hrstka přeživších lidí se nachází v přeplněném vlaku jménem Snowpiercer, který poháněn speciálním motorem cestuje po celém světě. Za těchto ztížených podmínek je založena nová sociální třídní struktura. Ti nejchudší jsou nuceni žít v zadní části vlaku, a čím více se přibližujeme k té přední, tím lepší nacházíme podmínky pro život. Kdosi až na konci vlaku však s tímto postavením není plně spokojený a proto vypukne vzpoura.
