16세기 일본 전국시대, 손님들과 함께 멧돼지 사냥을 끝낸 성주 이치몬지 히데토라는 일흔의 나이로 자신의 권력을 아들들에게 넘겨주겠다는 결심을 굳힌다. 그리고 사냥을 함께 한 다른 영주는 자신의 딸을 그의 아들과 혼인시키려 한다. 아들들을 따로 불러 모은 그는 오랫동안 곰곰이 생각해서 내린 결정이라며 장남인 타로가 자신의 뒤를 이어 가문을 이끌 것이라 선언한다. 그리고 둘째, 셋째 아들인 지로와 사부로에게는 두 번째와 세 번째 성과 그에 딸린 영토를 주겠다고 한다. 그는 난세에 외곽에서 호위대를 거느리고 자식들에게 기대어 안락하게 여생을 보낼 생각이였다. 하지만 막내인 사부로는 그 자리에서 아버지가 망령이 들었다고 비난하게 되고 이에 분개한 히데토라는 사부로와 절연한다. 충직한 탄고가 사부로를 감싸지만 그는 들은 체 만 체다. 그 과정을 지켜본 후지마키는 사부로를 자신의 영지로 받아들인다. 한편 처음에는 권력에 별로 욕심이 없었던 장남 타로는 ‘모든 권력과 호칭을 넘겨받지 못하면 그림자에 불과하다’는 아내 카에데의 부추김에 차츰 히데토라의 권력을 완전히 차지하려고 한다. 그리고 그 사이 히데토라가 타로의 부하를 화살로 쏴 죽이는 일까지 발생하면서 갈등이 점점 고조되는데...
사소한 잘못으로 상부로부터 할복 명령을 하달받은 사무라이가 그것에 저항하는 이야기. 인습과 전통에 대해 순응하는 일본 사회에 저항하는 메세지를 담은 작품.
전국 시대가 끝나고 드디어 평화가 찾아온 것처럼 보이는 에도(江戶) 시대 초기, 도쿠가와 치세. 그러나 그 밑에서는 다이묘(大名, 막부 직속의 유력 무사)들이 오이에(御家, 귀족이나 주군을 가리키는 호칭)의 토지를 몰수하는 일이 빈번하게 벌어지고 있었고, 일도 집도 잃고 생활이 힘들어진 로닌(浪人)들 사이에서는 '광언할복(狂言切腹)'이 유행하고 있었다. 그것은 유복한 다이묘들의 저택을 찾아가 "마당에서 할복하게 해달라."고 청원을 하는 것. 그러면 귀찮은 일이 벌어지는 것을 싫어하는 다이묘 집안이 직책과 돈을 내려주기 때문에 벌어지는 일이었다. 어느 날, 사무라이 하나가 할복을 요청했다. 이름은 츠쿠모 한시로(이치카와 에비조). 가로(집사 같은 역할) 사이토 가게유(야쿠쇼 코지)는 몇 개월 전에 똑같이 찾아온 젊은 로닌 치지이와 모토메(에이타)의 광언할복의 전말을 이야기하기 시작한다. 무사의 생명인 칼을 죽도로 바꿔 부끄러움도 없이 할복을 신청했던 젊은 로닌의 무참한 최후를 얘기한 것이다. 그런데 그 자리에서 한시로는 놀랄 만한 진실을 말하기 시작하는데…
막부시대에 쇼군의 동생이자 포악한 영주인 나리츠구를 암살하기 위해 쇼군의 최측근인 도이의 요청으로 신자에몬을 중심으로 13인의 자객이 모인다. 그들은 나리츠구가 에도에서 돌아오는 길에 거사를 행하기로 한다. 그러나 나리츠구의 경호대장 한베이 역시 신자에몬의 계획을 눈치채고, 그에 대한 대비책을 세운다.
18세기 초, 막부정치가 안정되고, 산업이 발달해 도시가 성장하던 겐로쿠 시대. 쇼군의 명령에 따라 에도에 머물던 아코의 영주 아사노가 고관 기라와 대립해 싸움을 벌이고 만다. 평화의 시대, 성에서는 칼을 뽑지 못하게 한 법도를 어긴 아사노에게 할복하라는 명령이 떨어진다. 오오이시를 비롯한 아사노의 부하들은 주군을 잃고 절망에 빠진다.
아코낭인 사건 이라고도 하는 이 사건은 도쿠가와 막부의 제 5대 쇼군 도쿠가와 쓰나요시가 집권하고 있던 1701년 에도성에서 일어났다. 칙사 접대를 담당한 아코성의 성주 아사노 다쿠미노카미가 의전 담당인 기라 고즈케노스케를 칼로 쳤으나 미처 죽이지 못하였지만, 그날로 할복을 하고, 가옥과 성이 몰수된다. 도쿠가와 막부의 조치에 불만을 지닌 아코성 가신인 오이시 구라노스케 이하 낭인 46, 총 47명이 그 다음해 12월에 기라의 저택을 급습하여 그를 죽인 후, 그 목을 아사노가 묻혀있는 센가쿠지(泉岳寺)로 들고가 복수를 완성하고, 1703년 3월 도쿠가와 막부의 결정에 따라 46명 할복했던 실제 사건을 그린 영화이다.

Mitsunao, upset by Yaichiemon actions, punished the Abe family unfairly. Objected to this, the Abe family shut themselves up in their manor as the lords troops moved in. She stops at the top of the stairs to say her prayers, rings a bell, and heads inside where the footage is shot in color. She unravels her kimono and rubs her face with the cloth before wrapping her blade and lovingly touching it. She pulls it across her stomach and slits herself open, falling to the mat. She crawls across the mat, dying, slipping in her own slick blood until she can't move anymore.

Also, they stab themselves with samurai swords instead of the typical shorter ritual knives...
