I det ældgamle ægypten adopterer faraoen spædbarnet Moses, der senere opdager, at han i virkeligheden er jøde. Moses beslutter at lede jøderne til frihed i Kanaans land på trods af sin bror Ramses hårdhændede forsøg på at stoppe dem. Senere drager Moses alene til Sinai-bjerget hvor han modtager de ti bud som leveregler for sit folk.

Som spædbarn bliver Moses af sin fattige mor sendt afsted på floden i en lille båd. Moderen er en hebraisk slave, der ikke kan give Moses et godt liv og derfor håber, at en anden, der kan, vil finde ham. Til Moses' store held bliver han fundet af ingen ringere end Egyptens prinsesse, der straks falder for den lille dreng og adopterer ham. Moses vokser op sammen med prinsessens anden søn Ramsess, og de to - som tror, de er brødre - har et meget tæt venskab. En dag finder Moses dog ud af sin virkelige herkomst; da slavepigen Tzipporah er flygtet, følger Moses hende til den hebraiske bydel, og her møder han sine virkelige søskende Miriam og Aaron.

Selvom der ikke er meget der tyder på det, er dagdrømmeren og nattevagten Larry, der arbejder på Naturhistorisk Museum, overbevist om, at han går en stor og dramatisk fremtid i møde. Og minsandten om han ikke får ret, da dinosaurer, gladiatorer, cowboys og mange flere på forunderlig vis bliver vakt til live en nat og begynder at udkæmpe drabelige kampe. For nogen skal jo dæmpe gemytterne og redde museet.

Nattevagten Larry er skal igen holde styr på hele museet, mens alle genstandene under en ombygning midlertidigt flyttes til verdens største museumskompleks 'The Smithsonian Institute'. Larry er den eneste der kender til den forbandelse, der gør at genstandene om natten bliver levende. Sammen med Roosevelt og piloten Emilia Erhardt forsøger han at undgå at flytningen ender i det totale kaos...

The grand scale and magnificent acoustics of the Roman arena in Verona are ideally suited to the pageantry of Verdi's Egyptian opera, presented here in a staging that is true to the original 1913 production, framed by obelisks and sphinxes and filled with chorus and dancers. Chinese soprano Hui He has won international acclaim for her portrayal of the eponymous slave girl whose forbidden love for the war hero Radamés (Marco Berti, the experienced Verdi tenor) brings death to them both.

The beautiful young Sushila is forced into a political marriage with young Pharaoh Nemorat in order to consolidate power. However, the young Pharaoh is beset with mental illness and the marriage becomes dangerous, all the while the chief advisor Kefren and his scheming mistress plot to destroy the unstable pair.
