Film vypráví příběh, v němž zločinec Richard "Stick" Montgomery uteče z vězení. A právě v té chvíli jsou policisté Chris Lecce a Bill Reimers nasazeni na zločincovu někdejší přítelkyni Marii McGuireovou. Oba muži zákona mají vystopovat, zda ji bude Montgomery po útěku kontaktovat. Pod záminkou výměny telefonu se dostane Chris do Mariina domu a zamiluje se do ní až po uši.

Debutující Lance Edmands zachycuje obyvatele v jejich různorodosti a vyhýbá se prvoplánově negativnímu líčení.
