August 5, 1987

Den farlige forbryder Richard "Stick" Montgomery (Aidan Quinn) er netop brudt ud af fængslet. Politiet har mistanke om, at han vil opsøge sin gamle kæreste Maria, så de starter en overvågning af hendes hus. 2 teams, 24 timer i døgnet. De to betjente Chris og Bill udgør det ene team. Når de ikke driller hinanden, chikanerer de - på mere og mere ondskabsfuld manér - det andet team (spillet af en tynd Forest Whitaker og faderen fra "Mine glade 60'ere", Dan Lauria). Men snart får betjentene øjnene op for noget helt andet: Maria! Chris bliver straks forelsket i hende, og det skaber selvfølgelig komplikationer. Specielt da "Stick" omsider dukker op...

Hank Stamper and his father, Henry, own and operate the family business by cutting and shipping logs in Oregon. The town is furious when they continue working despite the town going broke and the other loggers go on strike ordering the Stampers to stop, however Hank continues to push his family on cutting more trees. Hank's wife wishes he would stop and hopes that they can spend more time together. When Hank's half brother Leland comes to work for them, more trouble starts.

They sued the FBI for violations of the First Amendment, claiming the FBI knew they were innocent but arrested them to try to silence them. Having survived the bomb but now stricken by cancer, Judi Bari, a leader of the movement to save California's old growth redwoods, gives her on-camera, deathbed testimony about the attempt on her life and her colorful organizing history with the radical environmental movement Earth First.

En iskold eftermiddag i januar distraheres skolebuschaufføren Lesley af en vildfaren trækfugl og overser en lille dreng, som er faldet i søvn på en af bussens bagerste rækker. Drengens mor er samtidig færdig på sit arbejde, men i stedet for at tage turen direkte hjem, slår hun vejen forbi den lokale bar. Marla er alenemor og forsøger at dulme sin ensomhed gennem alkohol og pillemisbrug. Først næste morgen går det op for begge kvinder, at noget er ravruskende galt.
