Protagonista del film è Christian, curatore di un importante museo di arte contemporanea di Stoccolma, nonché padre amorevole di due bambine. Nel museo c'è grande fermento per il debutto di un'installazione chiamata "The Square", che invita all'altruismo e alla condivisione, ma quando gli viene rubato il cellulare per strada, Christian reagisce in modo scomposto, innescando una serie di eventi che precipitano la sua vita rispettabile nel caos più completo.
