Teenager Zach Cooper je znechucen tím, že se z velkého města musel přestěhovat do malého městečka. Zjišťuje ale, že vše má i své světlé stránky – setkává se totiž s krásnou dívkou Hannou, která žije v sousedním domě. Ale i v těch nejprosluněnějších končinách občas slunce zajde za mraky, a ty Zachovy se objevují ve chvíli, kdy zjišťuje, že Hannah má tajemného otce, ze kterého se vyklube R. L. Stine, autor série bestsellerů s názvem Goosebumps. Ukazuje se, že existují reálné důvody, proč je Stine takový podivín… Je totiž vězněm své vlastní představivosti. Příšery, kterými se jeho knihy proslavily, jsou skutečné, a Stine své čtenáře chrání tím, že tato monstra drží uvězněná ve svých knihách. Když Zach neúmyslně příšery z rukopisů vypustí a ty začnou terorizovat celé městečko, je na Stineovi, Zachovi a Hannah, aby je znovu vrátili do knih, kam patří.
Pan Peabody je geniální jako Einstein, vtipný jako Oscar Wilde, odvážný jako Indiana Jones, má deduktivní schopnosti Sherlocka Holmese, styl oblékání Jamese Bonda a kulinářské dovednosti Zdeňka Pohlreicha. Je také světově proslulou celebritou, držitelem Nobelovy ceny, olympijským vítězem ve skoku a desetiboji. A navíc je pes. Díky svým schopnostem a navzdory tomu, že je šelma, adoptoval pan Peabody malého kluka Shermana, kterého od plenek vychovává tak, jak nejlépe umí. Přesto si občas musí přiznat, že je to snad jediná věc, která mu tak úplně nejde a že má co dělat, aby se Shermanem vůbec udržel krok. Sherman je totiž velmi zvědavý a upřímný, díky čemuž se často dostává do různě velkých průšvihů.
