The mother of a feudal lord's only heir is kidnapped away from her husband by the lord. The husband and his samurai father must decide whether to accept the unjust decision, or risk death to get her back.

In a poor district of Edo lives a young samurai named Soza. He has been sent by his clan to avenge the death of his father. He isn't an accomplished swordsman however, and he prefers sharing the life of the residents, teaching the kids how to write etc. When he finally finds the man he is looking for, he will have to decide whether he follows the way of the samurai or chooses peace and reconciliation.

The fifth and final installment with the build up of the epic battle between Sasaki Kojiro and Miyamoto Musashi. With all the familiar characters making appearances: Otsu (Musashi's great love), Akemi, Matahachi (his former fellow soldier), old lady Osugi (still doggedly trying to defeat Musashi), and even the return of Priest Takuan (the man responsible for his journey towards enlightenment). But most of all, the boastful, long-haired and long-sworded Sasaki Kojiro.

A humble and simple Takezo abandons his life as a knight errant. He's sought as a teacher and vassal by Shogun, Japan's most powerful clan leader. He's also challenged to fight by the supremely confident and skillful Sasaki Kojiro. Takezo agrees to fight Kojiro in a year's time but rejects Shogun's patronage, choosing instead to live on the edge of a village, raising vegetables. He's followed there by Otsu and later by Akemi, both in love with him. The year ends as Takezo assists the villagers against a band of brigands. He seeks Otsu's forgiveness and accepts her love, then sets off across the water to Ganryu Island for his final contest.

A sadistic Daimyo (feudal lord) rapes a woman and murders both her and her husband, but even when one of his own vassals commits suicide to bring attention to the crime, the matter is quickly hushed up. Musashi then sets off to beat the functionaries of a treacherous clan in an arranged duel. 73 against one. Boastful Kojiro watches, secure in the knowledge that only he is a worthy opponent.

In this love story set in the Edo period, 27-year-old Oharu is a genius in the kitchen. Oharu attracts the attention of the master chef of the Kaga Domain, who arranges for her to marry his son and heir, 24-year-old Yasunobu. But, Yasunobu is cold to his new wife, and he's more interested in swordplay than cookery.

Der Handlungsort des Filmes ist ein Nachtasyl, in dem mehrere gescheiterte Existenzen (eine Hure, ein straffällig gewordener Gelehrter, ein heruntergekommener Samurai, ein alkoholkranker Schauspieler, ein Dieb und ein Handwerker mit seiner sterbenskranken Frau) Obdach finden. Es ist die Geschichte mittelloser, ausgebeuteter und erniedrigter Menschen, die sich alle nach einem besseren Leben sehnen, jedoch nicht in sich selbst die Kraft finden, ihr Leben zu ändern. Im Mittelpunkt der Handlung steht ein freundlicher buddhistischer Priester, der ebenfalls noch im Nachtasyl Obdach findet. Er versucht den Charakteren bei ihrer Selbstfindung zu helfen und sie so zu einem besseren Leben zu führen. Da er aber deren physische und psychische Abhängigkeiten verkennt, scheitert er und richtet nur noch größeres Unheil an.
