Od začátku mezi ostatní piloty nezapadl, přesto se snaží dokázat, že je lepší než ostatní. Poté, co se z něj stává letecké eso, velitelství ho propaguje jako národního hrdinu, aby pozvedlo morálku obyčejných vojáků, že i člověk jejich vrstev může být úspěšným důstojníkem.
