يستيقظ مجموعة من الأشخاص المختلفين داخل مكعب معدني ضخم يحتوي على آلاف الحجرات المكعبة ، وهم لا يتذكرون كيفية وصولهم ، يتبرع الشرطي (كوينتن) لقيادة المجموعة استنادا إلى خبراته ، ولكن يعارضه أحد أفراد المجموعة ، لكن العامل الحكومي (وورث) يتذكر ارتباط الحكومة بهذا المشروع السري ، وتساعده طالبة الرياضيات (ليفين) في اكتشاف الشفرات الرقمية للمكعبات ، ويساعدهم لص بخبراته في الهروب ، ويدرك الجميع أن استغلال قدراتهم المختلفة هو السبيل الوحيد للنجاة .
يفتح المعلم كبسولة زمنية تم حفرها في مدرسة ابنه الابتدائية ؛ فيه بعض التنبؤات المخيفة - بعضها حدث بالفعل والبعض الآخر على وشك الحدوث - التي تدفعه للاعتقاد بأن عائلته تلعب دورًا في الأحداث التي على وشك أن تتكشف.
تدور الاحداث حول (كريستيان وولف) محاسب قضائي وقانوني مشهود له بالبراعة والنزاهة والكفاءة، يخوض بالفيلم مناورات مثيرة وصراعات عدة، يحاول خلالها كشف العديد من التزويرات والتلاعبات التي تتم في السجلات المالية لصالح عملاء غير مُشرعين، فيثابر على الإيقاع بهم.
حين يُتّهم "ساندي باترسون" من "كولورادو" بجرائم لم يقترفها، يتعيّن عليه تعقّب شخص ما في "فلوريدا"... مُرتكب هذه الجرائم باسمه.
يعيش (والتر) حياة بسيطة برفقة عائلته، ولكن الأمور تتعقد عندما تهديه زوجته رواية في عيد ميلاده. تحكي الرواية عن جريمة غامضة تعتمد على الرقم 23، وهو الأمر الذي يجذب اهتمام والتر، ليبدأ في إيجاد العناصر المتشابهة بين حياته وحياة بطل الرواية، ويتحول الموضوع إلى حالة من الهوس الشديد. يبحث والتر عن مؤلف الرواية، وينتقل للإقامة في الغرفة رقم 23 من فندق، وهي نفس الغرفة التي وقعت بها أحداث القصة.
في إطار مستقبلي أحد السجون الذي تم تصميمه على شكل مكعب ضخم، وصمم بطريقة معقدة من أجل أن يمنع هروب المساجين، فهو مؤلف من مجموعة من الأفخاخ المنصوبة بدقة وإحكام شديدين، يحاول المساجين الهرب أكثر من مرة، لكن مع تغير الأفخاخ يموت منهم الكثيرون في كل مرة؛ مما يدفع أحد الحراس للتعاطف معهم، وإخباره بالطريقة التي قد يستطيعون بها الهرب.
