Auf der Anklagebank saßen 22 Angehörige der Waffen-SS, die alle zum Personal des KZ Auschwitz gehörten. Als nach 183 Verhandlungstagen am 20. August 1965 das Urteil gesprochen wurde, hatte das Gericht 409 Zeugen vernommen und damit die exakteste Beschreibung eines historischen Sachverhaltes geliefert, der später unter dem Begriff „Holocaust“ ins Bewusstsein der Zeit gekommen ist.
Zum 30. Jahrestag hatte der Hessische Rundfunk 1993 eine Serie produziert, die sich mit diesem Prozess auseinandersetzt.
