1982 tauchte ein Raumschiff über Johannesburg auf, an Bord außerirdische Flüchtlinge. Zwanzig Jahre später ist die ursprüngliche Gastfreundschaft der Menschen geschwunden. Aus dem Flüchtlingslager ist ein elendes Ghetto geworden, in dem die ungeliebten Besucher interniert sind: District 9. Das Privatunternehmen Multi-National United (MNU) erhält den Auftrag, sich um die Angelegenheit zu kümmern, verfolgt dabei aber ganz eigene Interessen. Als der MNU-Agent Wikus van de Merwe sich mit einem seltsamen Virus infiziert, wird er zur Zielscheibe und findet ausgerechnet im District 9 neue Freunde, die ihn unterstützen.

After World War II, 4,000 Polish families came to Australia. They were Jews, Fascists, anti-Communists, and others dispossessed. In a large hostel, where even married men and women were housed in separate barracks, the adults lived for two years while they worked off the government's payment of their passage. Even though he is married to Anna and has a son, Julian falls in love with Nina and she with him. As they and others face the new situations and prejudices that await immigrants and as they take on aspects of Australian culture, old-country values reassert themselves. Julian decides what to do about love and family, and Nina must find a way to move on.

The documentary tells the little known story of thousands of Ukrainian and Eastern Europeans that were interned in Canadian camps during the First World War.

The filmmaker's father and uncle, Norm and Stan, are third generation Japanese Americans. They are "all American" guys who love bowling, cards and pinball. Placed in the Amache internment camp as children during World War II, they don't think the experience affected them that much. But in the course of navigating the maze of her father's and uncle's pursuits while simultaneously trying to inquire about their past, the filmmaker is able to find connections between their lives now and the history that was left behind.

Documentary film version of the stage show in which actress Cynthia Gates Fujikawa explores the story of her father, actor Jerry Fujikawa, who had a long career in films and television, most often as a stereotyped Asian. The daughter, in the course of searching out her late father's history, discovers many things that she had not known, among them that her father had spent time in Manzanar, the internment camp for Japanese-Americans during World War II, that he had had a family prior to hers, and that somewhere out there was a sister she had never known existed.

The film features Chisao Hata, an artist, teacher and activist, and Jean Matsumoto, who was incarcerated at the Portland Assembly Center and in the Minidoka concentration camp as a child.
