Valdovui Hrotgarui įsakius, šalies numylėtinis Beovulfas su būriu narsių karių leidžasi gelbėti šalies gyventojų nuo siautėjančio pabaisos Grendelio, kuris kasnakt nusitempdavo ir surydavo dešimtis geriausių valdovo kareivių. Niekas negalėjo sustabdyti baisiojo slibino. Beovulfas, narsiausias iš karžygių, išgirdęs apie slibino piktadarystes, vyksta į pagalbą, lydimas geriausių karių. Atvykęs į vietą, Beovulfas pradeda abejoti, ar tikrai visame tame kaltas tik piktasis pabaisa, kai sužino apie slaptą valdovo Hrotgaro susitarimą.
