In 1962 Joris Ivens was invited to Chile for teaching and filmmaking. Together with students he made …À Valparaiso, one of his most poetic films. Contrasting the prestigious history of the seaport with the present the film sketches a portrait of the city, built on 42 hills, with its wealth and poverty, its daily life on the streets, the stairs, the rack railways and in the bars. Although the port has lost its importance, the rich past is still present in the impoverished city. The film echoes this ambiguous situation in its dialectical poetic style, interweaving the daily life reality (of 1963) with the history of the city and changing from black and white to colour, finally leaving us with hopeful perspective for the children who are playing on the stairs and hills of this beautiful town.

Film se odehrává za II. světové války v kárném zařízení pro anglické vojáky v libyjské poušti. Podmínky v táboře jsou nelidské samy o sobě a jsou ještě zhoršovány sadistickým velitelem, seržantem Williamsem. Pod heslem „přišli jako lidé, odejdou jako zvířata“ je den co den nutí stavět na žhavém slunci uprostřed tábora vysokou horu z písku. Vězni postupně ztrácejí nejen fyzickou, ale hlavně psychickou sílu a vůli. A zřejmě o to Williamsovi i jeho nadřízeným jde. Zlomit je a zpracovat v poslušné a tvárné roboty, kteří budou v budoucnu bezpodmínečně plnit jakékoli příkazy. Většině strážných se tato nesmyslná práce nelíbí, ale jen málokterý má odvahu Williamsovi oponovat. Pokud ano, je nucen nést následky. Vězni tak jen pasivně snášejí režim zrůdné mašinerie, protože každý sebemenší prohřešek je tvrdě trestán. Objeví se však jeden, který je pevně rozhodnut nenechat se zlomit ani zastrašit. A ostatním se začnou otevírat oči.

Provence 1895, městečko Aubagne. Malý Marcel vzpomíná na své dětství. Noří se do vůní, barev a bezstarostnosti mládí, kdy jako malý chlapec chodil za tatínkem do školy a sám se tak naučil psát, vzpomíná na své blízké - na svou maminku, krásnou a veselou ženu, na svou tetu Rózu a jejího bonvivánského muže Julese. Když mu byly tři roky, odstěhovali se na předměstí Marseille, kde jeho tatínek získal místo učitele. Ale ze všeho nejvíc mu učarovaly prázdniny, které rodina trávila v kopcích Provence, v nádherné divoké přírodě, kde malý Marcel chytal motýly a cikády, kde se učil poznávat květiny.

Koko and his friends are spending summer vacation on the shores of a lake near the idyllic Green Hill, hanging out and playing. The magical countryside is disturbed by unusual events which alarm the children as well as the locals: under cover of night, burglars break into one house after another.
