本片根據一則不可思議的真實事件改編，講述退休的傑瑞賽爾比發現麻州彩票的數學漏洞，在妻子瑪姬的幫助下贏得二千七百萬美元，並將之用於復甦他們在密西根州的小鎮。
依芳（布莉姬方達）是一個心地善良的好女生，她每天的工作就是在餐廳裡端盤子當服務生，不但枯燥無味，而且得面對各種人的冷嘲熱諷，當她第一次見到查理警官（金獎影帝尼可拉斯凱吉）時，她並不認為查理與其他人有什麼不同，所以當查理無法給她小費，而承諾若是自己身上彩券中獎，將與她平分時，她也根本不在意。
但是老實的查理不但中了頭獎，而且很甘心樂意的與依芳平分獎金，實現承諾，兩人也因此逐漸變成好友，但查理的老婆可就沒這麼好心了，不但懷疑老公平分獎金的動機，同時也被龐大的獎金給沖昏了頭，查理因此與老婆漸行漸遠，而與依芳愈加親近，贏了頭彩又將得到心目中的理想女孩，誰說好人沒有好報呢？
