Im Jahr 1943 in Paris lernt Pablo Picasso (Anthony Hopkins) die attraktive, junge Malerin Francoise Gilot (Natascha McElhone) kennen, die sich sofort zu dem weltbekannten Künstler hingezogen fühlt. Schon bald wird sie zu seiner Geliebten. Zusammen ziehen Picasso und Gilot an die Südküste Frankreichs und verbringen zusammen zehn Jahre, in denen sie ihm zwei Kinder schenkt. Gilot bewahrt jedoch immer ihre Unabhängigkeit und betätigt sich weiterhin als Malerin. Anders scheint es nicht möglich, das Leben mit Picasso auszuhalten, diese Lektion erteilen jedenfalls die Geschichten von Dora Maar (Julianne Moore), Olga Koklova (Jane Lapotaire) und Marie-Thérèse (Susannah Harker), den bisherigen Frauen im Leben Picassos. Als Gilot schließlich den Mut aufbringt, Picasso zu verlassen, bricht für diesen eine Welt zusammen.
