Mimozemšťan Klaatu pricestuje na Zem s jedinou úlohou - zabrániť ľudstvu v jeho organizovanej sebadeštrukcii aj za cenu najväčších obetí. Ľudstvo totiž svojimi vojnami ohrozuje mier v celom vesmíre. Klaatu chce ľudstvu pomôcť, otázkou však je, či o to vlastne stojíme. Ak sa vojny neukončia, musí Klaatu pristúpiť k najtvrdšiemu opatreniu, planétu Zem vymazať z mapy vesmíru. Kým on chce rokovať so svetovými mocnosťami, naším jediným záujmom je zavrieť ho do laboratória a vedecky ho preskúmať. Na úteku z laboratória ho sprevádza astrobiologička Helen Bensonová, ktorá spolu so svojím nevlastným synom uviazne v Klaatuovom poslaní.
