프랑스 작가 액토르 말로 (Haxtor Mallot) 원작으로, 1878년에 간행된 유명 아동 문학 소설을 바탕으로 제작된 애니메이션. 영국의 명문가에서 태어났으나 유괴되어 버려진 소년 레미가 비타리스라는 풍각쟁이 할아버지와 함께 프랑스 각지를 여행하며 돌아다니며 겪는 모진 풍상과 그런 힘든 환경에서도 굴하지 않는 밝고 명랑한 모습을 대비시켜 큰 호소력을 갖췄다. 그러나 애니메이션은 다소 끔찍할 정도로 비참한 원작을 여러면에서 각색하여 모든 연령대의 시청자들이 볼 수 있는 명작으로 재탄생시켰다.
본편은 1977년 10월 2일부터 1978년 10월 1일까지 총 51화 완결로 제작되었으며, 닛폰 TV 계열을 통해 방영되었다. 데자키 오사무 감독, 스기노 아키오 작화 감독, 코바야시 시치로 미술 감독이라는 뛰어난 스탭들의 조화가 빛을 발한 이 작품은 국내에도 수입 방영되어 많은 이들의 기억 속에 추억의 명작으로 자리 잡았다. 또한 이 작품은 1996년에 시청률 부진으로 위기를 맞은 닛폰 애니메이션사 <세계명작극장 시리즈>의 구원투수로 긴급 투입되어 리메이크 되기도 하였다. 다만 리메이크된 작품은 본편의 완성도와는 별개로 보다 자극적인 내용에 길들여진 90년대 아동 시청자들의 외면으로 23화 완결이라는 어정쩡한 상태로 마무리 되어 아쉬움을 남겼다.
