De Aardling Arthur Dent heeft een slechte dag. Zijn huis staat op het punt met de grond gelijk gemaakt te worden, en hij ontdekt dat zijn beste vriend Ford Prefect afkomstig is van een kleine planeet nabij Betelgeuse. De mensheid leeft op een tijdbom.
