I filmen 'Praktikanten' lever Ben Whitaker et stille liv som pensioneret enkemand. Den 70-årige newyorker er hverken ensom eller trist, men alligevel mangler der noget i tilværelsen efter et langt arbejdsliv og et mangeårigt ægteskab. Bens gåpåmod er stadig intakt, og da et succesfuldt modefirma har brug for en seniorpraktikant, søger han stillingen. Få dage senere har han første arbejdsdag på et hypermoderne kontor, hvor gennemsnitsalderen er omkring de 30, og hvor filterkaffe er et interessant kuriosum fra fortiden. Ben lader sig ikke slå ud, og på kort tid vinder han respekt fra sine nærmeste kolleger. Det viser sig til gengæld at være en langt større opgave at imponere kvinden, der er selskabets direktør og skaber.

Mario and Ana, in voluntary exile from Buenos Aires, live in a remote Argentine valley with their 12-year-old son Ernesto. Mario runs a school and a wool cooperative; Ana, a doctor, heads a clinic with Nelda, a progressive nun. Into this idealistic family comes Hans, a jaded Spanish geological engineer -- surveying the land for the local patron, to see if it can be dammed for hydro-electric power, which would drive the peasants from the land into the cities.

In the total isolation of his solitary life, and out of an entirely unfounded fear of stepping outside his flat, Claes has turned his tidy home into a prison. This is a film that demonstrates what loneliness can do to a person.
