Agli inizi del secolo una spedizione guidata da sir Anthony Ross e dal professor Ivarsson, esperto in geologia e in culture primitive parte per la Groenlandia alla ricerca del figlio di Ross là scomparso. Li accompagna il capitano Brieux, inventore e costruttore dell'Hyperion, un dirigibile di nuova concezione. Il gruppo raggiunge un lembo di terra che nonostante sia circondata da ghiacchi mantiene un clima mite a causa della presenza di fenomeni vulcanici. I tre devono scontrarsi con gli abitanti del posto discendenti degli antichi vichinghi.
