西元2000年，由於網路科技的日新月異，人類已經進入了一個全新的時代（網路時代）。 每一個人皆會隨身攜帶PET，PET類似小型的個人電腦，其中安裝有稱之為「網路領航員」的人工智慧電腦。PET及網路領航員的發明為人類的生活帶來許多好處，但是網路駭客、病毒的傳播及高科技的犯罪也成為日益嚴重的問題。 光熱斗是個國小五年級的學生，在他升上5年級的時候，父親為他設計了一個個人的網路領航員（洛克人）作為禮物，於是他與學校的好朋友們組成了一個網路領航員的團隊，他們解決了在網路上所發生的問題，結果他們發現，這些神秘的犯罪行為就是邪惡組織WWW一手所推行的。為了阻止WWW組織的網路領航員進行的計畫及散播病毒的行動，熱斗和洛克人不斷地與他們戰鬥。在網路警察與伊集院炎山的幫助下，光熱斗與洛克人勇敢地打擊犯罪，並且逐漸發掘出WWW組織的真正目的。

本條楓在好友白峰理沙的引誘下，開始玩起了 VRMMO 遊戲『NewWorld Online』，她替自己取名為梅普露。然而作為遊戲初學者，梅普露選擇了不受歡迎的大盾當武器，同時因為怕痛而把所有屬性點都點在防禦力上。雖然在遊戲初期因此吃了不少苦，但因為梅普露無視規則又異想天開的行動方式學到各種特殊技能，更以其奇特方式闖關地城獲得了稀有裝備，令防禦進一步提升的冒險故事。
各務桂菜醒來後，發現自己身體能夠自在地活動，身處VRMMORPG《里亞德錄》的世界，並化身成自己遊玩的等級封頂角色「葵娜」。雖然這是遊戲的世界，NPC的言行舉止卻十分真實，而且《里亞德錄》的世界比起她玩遊戲時已經過了200年。桂菜來到《里亞德錄》的世界前，處於22世紀日本的她須倚賴生命保障系統才能存活，終日躺在病床。在醫院的時光裏，她一直遊玩著《里亞德錄》。根據她的輔助AI「奇奇」所說，桂菜已經跟醫院系統和《里亞德錄》的技能大師系統斷線，而且醫院因打雷而停電，導致生命保障系統停止兩秒。桂菜這才發現，「各務桂菜」的肉體已經死去，只有自己的意識來到了《里亞德錄》....
