Egentlig vil John Tunstall bare opdrætte kvæg, mens han lærer en gruppe unge rødder at læse og skrive. Men den fæle forretningsmand Lawrence Murphy kan ikke tåle konkurrence og myrder derfor Tunstall. Det vil rødderne ikke findes sig i. Anført af William H. Bonney alias Billy the Kid tager de ud for at få hævn.

I 1892 bliver hærkaptajnen Blocker meget mod sin vilje beordret til at eskortere den døende Cheyenne-høvding Yellow Hawk og hans familie tilbage til stammens reservat. På rejsen møder de to ærkefjender en ung enke, hvis familie er blevet myrdet. Nu må den umage trio gøre fælles sag for at overleve i det barske landskab blandt fjendtlige Comanche-indianere og brutale strejfere.

Lovens lange arm rækker ud efter William H. aka Billy the Kid og hans bande. Heldigvis har Billy held til at befri dem, og de forsøger sammen at flygte til Mexico. For at fange og dræbe banden hyrer kvægkongen John S. Chisum en gruppe rigtig hårde negle, der bliver anført af Billys gamle ven Pat Garrett. Gruppen sætter straks efter Billy og Co.

Kvægopdrætteren John Chisum har været med til at forme landet i konstant kamp med naturen, da rigmanden Murphy beslutter sig for at blive egnens store jordbesidder. Murphy har byens sherif i sin lomme, og nu vil han eje Chisum's ranch.

The Kid i titlen refererer til Billy the Kid, en af de mest berygtede lovløse i det vilde vesten. Denne gang er historien dog fortalt gennem den unge fyr Rios øjne. Han havner i krydsilden mellem Billy the Kid og sheriffen Pat Garrett, mens han leder efter sin søster, som er blevet kidnappet. Rio må nu vælge mellem at holde sig på den rigtige side af loven eller slutte sig til de lovløse for at redde sin søster. Dane DeHaan spiller Billy, Ethan Hawke er Pat Garrett, og skuespilleren Vincent D'Onofrio har instrueret.

After a particularly brutal heist, Alex is disturbed by the actions she and her fellow gang members have just committed. Terror sinks in as she looks around the campfire and realizes that she's the only one affected by their grizzly deeds.
