No início dos anos 70, São Francisco era a cidade da contracultura e é para lá que vai viver o nova-iorquino Harvey Milk e o seu namorado, Scott. Decidido a enfrentar o ódio e o preconceito, Milk engaja-se numa luta pela defesa dos direitos civis dos homossexuais e torna-se num dos primeiros homossexuais assumidos e militantes a ser eleito para os órgãos cívicos do município de São Francisco, em 1977.

No fim dos anos 1960, um adolescente começa a descobrir novas ideias políticas e as dificuldades da vida adulta, às vésperas da rebelião de Stonewall, quando lésbicas, gays, bissexuais e transgêneros enfrentaram a polícia de Nova York.

Na Inglaterra, no final do século XIX, o brutal e amargurado marquês de Queensberry, que acredita que seu filho mais novo, Bosie, tem um relacionamento inadequado com o famoso escritor irlandês Oscar Wilde, mantém uma rixa contínua com o último com o objetivo de arruinar sua reputação e causar sua queda em desgraça.

O filme explora a questão de até onde os dançarinos estão dispostos a ir para terem sucesso na carreira que ambicionam através da vida de Rudolf Nureyev, um famoso dançarino russo de ballet. Nureyev, reconhecido internacionalmente, foi um dançarino que teve de subjugar-se ao asilo em França durante os anos 60 (no auge da guerra Fria) e que teve de aprender com a pressão inerente a uma carreira no ballet russo, conhecido como uma das escolas mais exigentes a nível mundial.
